Get on your bike for fun

THIS week is National Motorcycle Week – seven glorious days extolling the virtues of two-wheeled fun.

It really is this simple – riding a motorbike in the summer is the most fun you have while keeping your clothes on – unless you’re one of the lucky few who have joined the millionaires club and own your own private plane.

Biking gives you the freedom to cruise through the bank holiday traffic jams on your way to country pubs – it gives you the knowledge that with a simple flick of the wrist all the boy racers trying to impress the ladies in their souped-up Subarus will be left far behind in your wake.

Biking gives you the freedom to go wherever you want. Nothing is comparable. After passing your CBT – which involves a day riding round cones in a school playground followed by a supervised trip out on to the roads on a 125cc bike, you’re then free to ride around the roads on a low-powered machine.

But it’s not until you’ve got your Category A license which, for the over-21s, can be after a two-day intensive course and an examination, you’re free to take your pick of some of the classiest machines around.

From the heavyweight touring bikes like the Honda Goldwings, which are build for comfort and durability, to the thrilling Ninjas and GSXRs where speed and performance can take from 0-60 in under three seconds, learning to ride – and ride well – opens up a whole new world of entertainment and excitement.

Simon Horwood, owner of Brackley Yamaha, said: “Biking has never been so popular as people seek to escape the day to day stress of modern Britain.

“Whether it’s a mid-life crisis or simply seeking a more fuel efficient, environmentally friendly form of transport two wheels is the way to go.

“Despite the fact that we have a very tiny island with not a lot of space British bikers still seem to love their sportsbike with the awesome Yamaha R1 still being one of the best sellers along with the FZ1 Fazer which shares the R1 engine but in a more ‘comfortable’ chassis.

“As a training school we are now almost fully booked right up to the new test which comes in on September 29 this year as people seek to avoid having to travel a much greater distance to one of the few new multi purpose test centres. One of the best selling bikes for people who pass their test is the Yamaha FZ6, both the faired and naked version as this provides an enjoyable start to their biking career on a rewarding but not ‘scary’ bike.

“In fact even the younger customers who pass their test on a 125 can also enjoy the FZ6 as it can be fitted with a restrictor to reduce power and keep them legal for the first two years post test.”
